THE PANDEMIAL GENERATION
Pandemials (1996-2012) are the children of Generation X. They are entering the job market during the pandemic crisis. They will be the most strongly hit by the turbulence caused by the change in Human Cycles that will take place during this decade. These young people have been referred to by many names, including Generation Z, centennials, and post-millennials. The pandemic crisis and the acceleration of the Human Cycles after the pandemic is what will mark the rest of their lives.
Unlike previous generations, subcultures were unable to penetrate them and slowly dissolved. This was due to the different social networks that began to take their place and unify their ideals. The largest of these networks originally focused on a single social group, before it grew broader. Instagram started with Hipsters; TikTok among younger generations; Facebook was the platform chosen by university students; and Twitter was the choice for those looking for instant news. The issue for pandemials is that they do not want to be labeled under any specific subculture, they just want to feel normal, accepted and heard by all.
Pandemials have an incredible capacity to organize and carry out political activism on social media. On July 15, 2020, Donald Trump tweeted that close to one million people had requested tickets to the launch of his re-election campaign in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the Bank of Oklahoma Center with a capacity for 19,200 spectators. Due to organizersâ fears of thousands of people overflowing the venue, they set up an outdoor event stage for Trump to talk to the massive overflow crowd anticipated based on the ticket requests. On the day of the event, only 6,200 people showed up and the outdoor stage was hastily disassembled.(174) What had happened was that thousands of pandemial TikTok users had requested tickets to the event, thereby fooling the campaign organizers. Teenagers dancing the âMacarenaâ on TikTok claimed credit for duping organizers into overestimating rally attendance. A video titled âDoing the macarena in front of my confirmation for 2 tickets to Trumpâs rally so those 2 seats will be emptyâ went viral, inspiring hundreds of thousands of young people to do the same, ultimately emptying the event using only virtual means.
Pandemials are young, self-sufficient, secure and have a strong do-it-yourself attitude. Unlike millennials, they do not have parents who can help them out financially, making them rely on the state to a greater degree. They do not want to acquire massive debt in order to go to university like millennials and first-world Gen Xers, leading them to demand that the state cover the cost. They do not see the world viably maintaining these levels of inequality and have no doubts in voting for left-wing candidates despite their more radical proposals. To them, socialism can be something cool, as they know little about the world before the Cold War. Mao, Che Guevara, and the hammer and sickle symbol of the Soviet Union are just trendy logos they saw stamped on someoneâs T-shirt, but they know little of the crimes committed and the suffering they inflicted.
